Seeking God all the days of our lives

As God’s own, we want to be everseeking — not of anything, but of God! It can be so easy to stop seeking sometimes. Either it seems like it’s too much work or we just become apathetic to it. Even David, the humble shepherd turned mighty king, seemed to have felt the same way. Of all the things he could’ve asked of God and of all the things he could’ve sought after, it just came down to one thing. It wasn’t vanity of vanities, like what his son struggled with (Ecclesiastes 1:1-2), no ivory throne nor fleet of ships (1 Kings 10:18, 22). Rather, David asked for something that would last much longer: he wanted to be with God.

He doesn’t just say that, though. He describes it like he’s painting a masterpiece of a picture, intricately giving us detail of how we can seek God, even today.

  1. To dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of our lives

When we think of dwelling with God, we tend to jump directly to when we die and heaven. We’re not wrong, really. We know that in the end, we will see God face-to-face and that we will dwell fully with him (Revelation 21:3). But this doesn’t say that we will dwell in the house of the Lord after we die. It says all the days our of lives! The house of God, where God is, is somewhere we can be every day we live. He has made it possible to be with him. We don’t have to pilgrimage to a certain city once a year or even to a specific meeting place to find our Lord. Christ lives in our hearts through faith (Ephesians 3:17). It’s one of the most precious gifts God could give us while we are still here on earth.

  1. To gaze upon the beauty of the Lord

And when we go into God’s house, it’s not for selfish reasons. Yes, there are times when all we can think about is making our requests known to God (Philippians 4:6), but that shouldn’t be the main focus and norm. When we are truly in God’s presence, we are both inexplicably at peace (Philippians 4:7) and understandably awestruck by who God is. His glory was such that Moses could only see his back and still live (Exodus 33:20-23). We are able to seek God’s beauty every day here on earth — he has made it possible! — and one day we will get to forever adore him without interruptions of sin.

  1. To inquire in God’s temple

As we take in the beauty of God like a breath of fresh air, we also come to the house of God to inquire and to meditate. This isn’t an emptying of the mind — it’s filling it with all the goodness of God. When we read the Bible, we aren’t struggling to understand it alone. God is with us and he wants us to inquire and meditate on what we’re reading. He will guide us into all truth (John 16:13). He doesn’t leave us wandering and wondering. Rather, he will give good things (even himself!) to his children who ask of him (Luke 11:13).

This is our daily lives. It’s not what it might look like on the surface, trying to read an old book every day to check it off our list and make ourselves feel like we did the right thing. Instead, if we look at it on the much deeper level, we know that every day of our lives, we want to escape this world and enter into a place of peace and beauty, where God is. He is always on his throne. And he is always reaching out to be with us.

That is why we want to be everseeking — simply and forever seeking God.
