Everyday life with Jesus

Reading it

“And every day he was teaching in the temple, but at night he went out and lodged on the mount called Olivet.” Luke 21:37

Studying it

Every day. This was right before Jesus was going to die. He had already come in triumphantly to Jerusalem (Luke 18) and he was waiting to be crucified, because he knew what was coming. But his death didn’t happen right away. Instead, Jesus taught in the temple — every day. These were his last few days leading up to his severe physical and spiritual pain in carrying our wounds and sins. And Jesus knew that.

But he didn’t sit down and expect people to serve him.

Instead, he continued to serve us.

He spent every day leading up to his death teaching us, mankind. Because that’s how much he cared for us. He saw us as harassed, like sheep without a shepherd (Matthew 9:36) and tried to share as much as time would allow about the glory of belonging to God and not to the devil.

But he didn’t make a speech then return in a royal fashion to heaven.

He proved what he was saying was right. And we who see the full story of the gospel know that to be true. Because after Jesus taught every day, his place for the night was a mount called Olivet — the mount of Olives.

And we know that this is where Jesus was betrayed.

Jesus was teaching about living a life where we could be reunited with our Creator, a life where we would have a purpose. But all of that was only possible because he died. Otherwise, he would’ve been just a great teacher.

But Jesus was so much more. He became our Savior, making a way for us to put off our old sinful selves and instead be renewed to live a life created after the likeness of God (Ephesians 4:22-24).

Living it

We still get to hear Jesus teach every day.

It wasn’t a one-time thing. We didn’t miss the window of getting to hear Jesus just because we were more centuries later. God preserved the words he wanted us to know in a book, one handed down all these centuries later. The words it contains are precious and just as life-giving now as they were then. They are practical and glorious all in one.

This is the kind of life we are promised as Christians. We have a new chance every day to wake up and hear what God has to say and then live with those words treasured in our hearts.

For those of you who have joined us in the Everseeking Resolution of 2024, we are so excited to start this year in intentionally doing that!

But to all, our prayer for you in this new year is that you continually seek to hear God’s words and that you let them bring you back to God and to a beautiful life of walking with Him — our God, our Evergreen Cypress.

“It is I who answer and look after you. I am like an evergreen cypress; from me comes your fruit.” - Hosea 14:8
